The 13 th Congressional District covers the portion of the Bronx neighborhood of Kingsbridge that is east of Tibbets Avenue and south of Van Cortlandt Park South. With a population of approximately 10,000 residents, Kingsbridge is nestled between the Bronx Communities of Riverdale, Bedford Park, and University Heights. It’s northern boundary, and the northern boundary of the District, is Van Cortlandt Park.
Kingsbridge is bisected by the Major Deegan Expressway and is, as a result, burdened by the noise and emissions of vehicles travelling from Rockland and Westchester Counties and Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. Kingsbridge is serviced by the 1 train at 231 st and 238 th Streets, but its residents need greater access to the 1 train and to the 4 train at Bedford Park Avenue and the Mosholu Parkway stations. Enhanced bus service to these residents would make public transportation much more accessible. Availability of quality public education and less crowded schools are important issues to Kingsbridge residents, as are the continuing viability of the Social Security and Medicare systems. Mr. Fenstermaker intends to make these neighborhood needs a priority after his election in November.
